Augustinus Franz Kropfreiter composed the Altdorfer Passion, based on the biblical accounts of Christ’s suffering and death, for two vocal soloists and eleven instruments. A strong influence on the compositional process of this chamber oratorio was Albrecht Altdorfer’s famous depictions of the Passion of the Christ, displayed in the museum at St Florian.
This work marked the composer’s international breakthrough.
