In the summer of 1782, while living in in Vienna, Wolfang Amadeus Mozart began working on a new, great mass. In all likelihood, this composition received its inaugural performance on 26th October 1783 in Salzburg’s St Peter’s church, with Mozart’s wife Constanze as the soprano soloist.
It is a monumental work, exceeding all parameters of his preceding masses, and ranks among his most outstanding compositions.
