Over the course of the 20th century, the Grand Hotel Toblach experienced highs and lows, changed hands several times and served different purposes. During the First World War, it was even converted into a military hospital. Bankruptcy followed during the Great Depression and the hotel changed hands frequently. It housed various organizations, including the umbrella organization of the fascist party and later the cartographic and geographical service of the Italian army. For a while, it was also a rest home for needy children.
In 1991, the South Tyrolean provincial government began renovation work to transform this historic building into a modern cultural and congress center. Since 1999, the Grand Hotel Toblach has not only housed the Gustav Mahler Hall, but also a youth hostel, a top restaurant, the 3 Zinnen Nature Park House, the local music school, the Alta Pusteria Youth Service, a further education center, social housing and a vacation home. The building has developed into a center for culture and education, hosting both local and regional events.
Major cultural events take place here every year, including the Gustav Mahler Music Weeks, the South Tyrol Festival and the Dobbiaco Talks. The Gustav Mahler Hall in the Grand Hotel Toblach is therefore not only a room with impressive acoustics, but also a place that reflects the rich history and cultural diversity of this region.
